I'm some of that total. I like the idea a lot. I also like Kickstarter in general for helping stuff like this grow. That's a pledge, not a charge at this time - if the project doesn't hit $1,000 by March 31, no one gets charged anything.

Kickstarter has provided a great alternative to traditional modes of publishing, too. Post a ransom - give me $5,000 in 30 days - and then wait. If the ransom gets filled, distribute the product for free. If not, delete it.
This lets people who really want the product pay more for it, while people who only sort of want it can float a few bucks to see if it's worthwhile. And nobody's charged until the project is fully funded.
