It's official - the Republicans did a great job with their convention. McCain is rocking some great poll numbers, Palin's got great favorability ratings, and Obama is getting all huffy and making stupid mistakes. I know that this is a convention bounce that will fade at least partially, and I'm all for treating liberals and conservatives in an intellectually evenhanded manner. But right now, seeing this just pisses me off.

This election is not just about the candidate, it's about the populace. This is the start of a rough period for liberals like me, who have been watching with surprise and pride as their nation finally showed a clear preference for a fellow liberal. Maybe, we thought, people are finally recognizing the fact that social and foreign policy conservatives are consistently on the wrong side of history. Maybe all it took was someone a little less insipid than John Kerry, and a little less dull than Al Gore. Maybe underneath all the fear and suspicion, America is willing to give the government just enough benefit of the doubt to trust them with the money to administer mercy to the lower class.

So with Democrats holding a 57%-43% edge in party registration, McCain having any appreciable kind of lead is complete garbage. Could independents distrust the Democratic party so much? Was the prosperity under Bill Clinton too much for you guys?

Barack, your campaign needs to get just a little less risk averse, even when you're ahead in the polls. McCain's VP pick rocked yours, his ads are more creative and get more attention, and it makes you seem plenty complacent. I wish our country didn't require it, but you don't just have to have good ideas and a history of helping people empower themselves - you also have to be the ringmaster of a circus, in a tent full of drunk and hooting fans.

Sean Guinn at http://www.fivethirtyeight.com makes a great point in this post: http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/09/sarah-palin-is-not-hockey-mom.html He talks about how it's the person who hits second is the one who gets penalized. So when Palin spouts her bullshit about being against earmarks and bad-mouths the Constitution, it will be Obama who looks weak calling her out.

"President McCain" is an anagram for "cretin pandemics!"

    COINCIDENCE?!

I'm not big on politics. I just thought I'd share what I thought of all this.

She may have been a good choice for VP. Heck, she might have been the only good choice for a VP. Anyone else, it would be easy to jump on that and say "More of the same" It would be a lot easier to promise something different.

She was a pick that got people looking at McCain again. People tuned in to listen about his tragic past and how he'd fight to make the changes we needed while keeping this huge image of honor on our troops. He was there doing what no one expected him to do. Something people were looking for the democrats to do even. Giving us the sign that it would not be the same leadership in Washington.

As a VP though, I don't think Palin's going to do that great of a job. She's a great pick for revitalizing a campaign, but best for the public? Will she do the things that women flocked to Hilary for as President? I mean considering she was relatively unknown until a few weeks ago, it's a huge gamble (Despite what she might of done for Alaska)

Regardless, I hope Obama steps up his game a bit. I also hope that whoever gets elected will prove me wrong with my doubts about their campaigns.

Speaking of Obama though, do you have any of his books Eric? I have to read a certain one for my African American Literature course.

I have both of his books - Dreams From My Father, and The Audacity of Hope. I read them both, and enjoyed them both, especially Dreams. Dreams was written just before he started his political career, and is an autobiography, whereas Audacity is a statement of his political views.

Do you want to borrow one...?

Yeah, I need to read Dreams From My Father as part of the course reading list. If you wouldn't mind loaning it to me for the semester.

No problem! It's at home in Brooklyn, which I'll be visiting this weekend. I can mail it to you on Monday morning -- is that soon enough?
